How to reduce your child's fear of shots

Getting shots at the doctor's office can be stressful for both you and your child. But getting your child the shots (immunizations) he/she needs every year helps reduce his/her risk for disease and sickness. Here are some tips to help your child:

  • Be supportive and positive. Tell him/her how brave they are and how proud you are of them.
  • Explain what the shot is and that it helps keep him/her healthy.
  • Offer to hold his/her hand.
  • Tell a story.
  • Let them know that even though it may hurt a little, it will not last long.
  • Have your child take slow deep breaths with you.
