Symptoms and triggers
Asthma symptoms can be mild to severe. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few minutes to many hours or days.
- Coughing, especially at night
- Coughing during exercise
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe)

Asthma triggers are things that can make your asthma worse. It is important to know what your asthma triggers are and to avoid them. It is also important to know that asthma symptoms can happen at any time.
Common triggers include:
- Dust mites
- Mold and mildew
- Strong odors, like perfume
- Changes in weather
- Cold and flu
- Emotions, like crying, yelling or even laughing
Talk with your doctor about your asthma. Your doctor can help you figure out what triggers your asthma.
Many factors can contribute to asthma symptoms. That’s why it’s important for you to practice everyday healthy habits so you can say “I Am Healthy.”
